LIFELINE

Here we are
Transmitting information
Via binary encoded pulses of light
Speaking to each other using micro waves

The sun is free
Yet we pay for energy
We drill holes in the ground
Create toxic waste dumps
While others lay huddled
Under a tarp
Waiting
To be maimed , raped and slaughtered

Are we really so advanced ?
Do we behave like spiritual beings ?
Will we give the homeless a dollar
Instead of a dime ?
Can we throw those less fortunate
A lifeline ?

Now we buy computers that are phones as well
We play games and download apps
Still some of us go through hell

I hope things change
For those less fortunate
Because it breaks my heart
To see how things have gone

I think I will save my dollar instead of creating a demand which involves some poor person to die of silicosis while mining silicon for chips so that I can check ny email. I'll just nursre this 10 year old computer along until sombody gives me another one...besides I hate windows vista. why can't they just sell XP again.

In Chicago the Loop (financial district) is filled with the homeless on every other street corner. I give when I can, usually paper money. The other day, I passed by one of the regulars on my daily route. I only had 75cents on me, so I gave it to him. He said, "Next time give me money that folds". So, there's that element too. Quite a lot of it, actually.

I feel so deeply for those who work in jobs like mining when its because they don't have a choice due to where they life, etc... And yet, I'm inclined to believe that they consider themselves more fortunate than many, simply to have a steady job.

I can also imagine it being read aloud. You raise points that I think about all the time. The wealthier nations regard so much as being disposable - even people. I think that somewhere along the line we have to address the issue of disenfranchised people in our society before it's too late to do anything about it.

Thank you for your sensitive insights. You make me feel hopeful!
